Sometimes fractured bones do not heal or join together properly, which is called malunion. With malunion, a fracture heals in a position that is not normal or correct. In most cases, slight changes in your bone structure do not cause symptoms. But, when the changes are more extreme, you may experience difficulty with motion and pain in your ankle. When malunion limits your activities and causes pain, surgery is often required as treatment.
