A complication worth noting relates to the mechanical failure of medical equipment, or hardware. Medical equipment is regularly tested and meets strict standards. The most common cause of hardware failure or breakage is delayed healing of the fracture. If the fracture has not healed, the hardware will be continually stressed. Metal can only withstand so much stress before it eventually breaks. In some cases, a repeat surgery may be necessary to remove the hardware.
