Nontraumatic Causes of Avascular Necrosis: Alcohol Use
In people who drink an excessive amount of alcohol, fatty substances may block blood vessels, causing a decreased blood supply to the bones, which results in
avascular necrosis.
Risk Factors for Avascular Necrosis
Avascular necrosis research has shown that people with certain risk factors are more likely than others to develop avascular necrosis. While not causes of avascular necrosis, a risk factor is anything that increases a person's chance of developing the disease.
Besides steroid and alcohol use, other risk factors or conditions associated with nontraumatic avascular necrosis include:
- Gaucher's disease
- Pancreatitis
- Radiation treatments and chemotherapy
- Decompression disease
- Blood disorders such as sickle cell disease.
