Closed Caption - Possible Risks (Bunionectomy With Osteotomy) -- Blood Loss

Blood supply is necessary to provide oxygen and nutrients to tissue and bone. Without this blood supply, the tissue and bone will die. Loss of blood supply to the bone occurs very rarely, perhaps in 1 out of 1000 procedures. Usually, this complication develops over many months following the surgery and may cause pain. If this occurs, surgery is usually necessary. Surgical correction usually involves a fusion at the MTP joint. This eliminates pain by removing motion at this joint.
