Tendon tearing is an uncommon complication of a distal radius fracture. When this does occur, it usually involves the rupture of the tendon that allows extension or straightening of the thumb. As a result of inflammation, it is usually not possible to sew the tendon back together. Treatment usually involves transferring a less important tendon from the index finger to the thumb. In most cases, this tendon transfer returns function to the thumb.

Other tendons may also be damaged as a result of the injury. These can often be repaired at the time of your surgery with excellent return of their function.
