Your Doctor Is Recommending Surgery
Based on your current symptoms, physical exam and x-ray results, your doctor is recommending surgery for your wrist fracture. The goal of this surgery is to return your wrist to its normal position and keep it stable until your fracture heals.
Wrist fractures are very common and often occur if you fall down onto an outstretched hand. Many wrist fractures can be treated without surgery. For example, if the bone is broken but remains in its normal position, only a cast is needed to keep it supported while it heals. Other times, the bone can break and shift slightly out of place. In some of these cases, your doctor can put the bones back into place, without surgery, and then use a cast.
Through their experience, orthopedic doctors have learned which type of fractures respond well to these methods, and which fractures respond better with surgery.
At this time, your doctor feels that surgery is the most appropriate treatment for your wrist fracture.
