Jakafi Side Effects

Most people who use Jakafi will experience some type of side effect, such as headaches, bruising, or dizziness. Because reactions to this drug can be significant, make sure to contact your healthcare provider right away if you develop more serious problems, such as extreme tiredness, unexplained bleeding, or difficulty breathing.

An Introduction to Jakafi Side Effects

Just like any medicine, Jakafi™ (ruxolitinib) can cause side effects. In some cases, the side effects can be significant. Although not everyone who takes the medication will have problems, most people will experience some type of side effect during Jakafi treatment. Talk to your healthcare provider about ways you can manage some of these reactions.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with this drug. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects of Jakafi

Jakafi has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking Jakafi were carefully documented and compared to the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking a placebo (a "sugar pill" that does not contain any active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the placebo.

In clinical studies, the most common side effects of Jakafi included:

  • Anemia (low red blood cell counts) -- in up to 96.1 percent of people
  • Low platelet counts (which could increase the risk for bleeding) -- up to 69.7 percent
  • Increased liver enzymes (which could be a sign of liver problems) -- up to 25.2 percent
  • Bruising -- up to 23.2 percent
  • Low levels of a certain type of white blood cell (neutropenia) -- up to 18.7 percent
  • Dizziness -- up to 18.1 percent
  • Increased cholesterol levels -- up to 16.8 percent
  • Headaches -- up to 14.8 percent
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs) -- up to 9 percent
  • Weight gain -- up to 7.1 percent
  • Gas -- up to 5.2 percent
  • Shingles (herpes zoster) -- up to 1.9 percent.
