After having arthroscopy, 90 out of 100 patients experience good to excellent results, meaning that there is relief of pain, locking, swelling or other symptoms. Results are best when swollen or inflamed plicae is the only abnormal finding.
Sometimes when the plica becomes very large or tight, it causes damage to the underlying cartilage inside your knee. In this case, the arthroscopy may help relieve the inflammation of the plica, but it will probably not relieve the long-term pain that is associated with cartilage damage. During surgery, your doctor will be able to tell how much damage, if any, has been done to your cartilage.
If your doctor discovers another problem in your knee during the procedure, such as a torn meniscus, this could also affect the success rate and results of the procedure.
