Generic Skelid: An Overview
Skelid® (
tiludronate disodium) is a Paget's disease medication available by prescription. It is part of a group of medications known as bisphosphonates. Skelid is made by sanofi-aventis and is not available in generic form at this time.
When Will Generic Skelid Be Available?
The last listed patent for Skelid expired in January 2010. However, there are no generic versions of this medication available at this time, as no manufacturers have chosen to make a generic Skelid, for unknown reasons. Perhaps it would not be financially feasible for a company to make and sell a generic version, since this product has a fairly small market.
Is Tiludronate the Same as Generic Skelid?
No -- tiludronate is the active ingredient in Skelid but is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that, oftentimes, the active ingredient of any drug is referred to as the "generic name." The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
