Skelid Dosage

The recommended starting Skelid dosage for the treatment of Paget's disease is 400 mg once daily for three months. After the initial three-month treatment period, your healthcare provider may recommend re-treatment if necessary. Make sure to take your Skelid dose first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. You should also avoid eating or drinking two hours before or after your dosage.

Skelid Dosage: An Introduction

There is only one standard dose of Skelid® (tiludronate disodium), regardless of your age, weight, or other medical conditions. As is always the case, do not adjust your Skelid dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Skelid Dosing for Paget's Disease

According to the manufacturer of Skelid, the recommended starting Skelid dose for treating Paget's disease of bone is 400 mg once daily for three months. However, this is a little confusing, since Skelid comes only in 240 mg tablets. Each tablet contains 240 mg of tiludronate disodium, which is equivalent to 200 mg of tiludronic acid.
It is assumed that the manufacturer's recommended dosage is referring to the acid form (not the disodium form), although this is not the standard practice. Therefore, the recommended dose is two tablets of Skelid (480 mg of tiludronate disodium, which is equivalent to 400 mg of tiludronic acid) once daily for three months.
If necessary, you may be re-treated with Skelid after at least three months after the initial treatment.

General Information on Dosing With Skelid

Considerations for people taking Skelid include the following:
  • Skelid comes in tablet form. It is taken by mouth every day for three months.
  • Take Skelid on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking a dose. Do not eat for two hours before or after taking Skelid. Many foods interact with Skelid, decreasing its absorption into the body (making it less effective).
  • Swallow Skelid tablets whole with a full glass of plain water (not any other beverage).
  • Do not take vitamins, minerals, or antacids that contain calcium, iron, magnesium, or aluminum within two hours of taking Skelid (see Skelid Drug Interactions).
  • You need to make sure you get enough calcium and vitamin D while taking Skelid. Skelid cannot adequately build bone without calcium and vitamin D, and calcium and vitamin D help to prevent low blood calcium caused by Skelid.
  • It is best to take Skelid at the same time each day to maintain an even level of the medication in your blood.
  • For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed.
  • If you are unsure about anything related to Skelid or your Skelid dosage, please talk with your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Do not stop taking the drug without first discussing it with your healthcare provider.
